WHAT IS A DOULA AND
WHY SHOULD I HIRE ONE?

The word Doula means "woman servant" and is a title used for centuries to depict women specialized in caring for and supporting other women during pregnancy and beyond. The idea of being a servant or having a servant's heart is also a huge part of our spiritual lives. It is not a new idea to Christianity or as mothers, nurses, and wives to find ways to serve others,  We have known first hand the pure beauty that comes from serving another person in need. Doula's do that for moms and their families and it amazing how much of a positive difference it makes.

A Doula is a trained professional who provides continuous physical, emotional, mental and spiritual support to the mother, partner and baby during pregnancy and beyond. A doula is the birthing mother's support and companion enabling her to have the labor she wants as well as coach her in unexpected situations. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) states, "continuous one-to-one emotional support provided by support personnel, such as the doula is associated with improved outcomes for the women in labor". Women who hire a doula have fewer complications, shorter labors, fewer c-sections, fewer inductions, less use of IV medications  improved VBAC rates, better APGAR scores and lower rates of postpartum depression.
